Inhabitat's Week of the Green: Wind Farms and Algae Power as well as an Airplane made of Hemp

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and green technology news for us -- it's the Week in Green. Highways are big dark, black surfaces that absorb plenty of sun. Wouldn't it be more sensible to make them solar-powered? Minecraftserverlist.live Designer Daan Roosegaarde had this idea, and now it's becoming a reality. Heijmans Infrastructure and Roosegaarde teamed together to install solar-powered glowing lines along the Dutch highway. The test was a success, and it will soon expand to other parts of the country. Also on the renewable energy front, Masdar is building a 50-megawatt wind farm for the Sultanate of Oman, making it the biggest wind farm in the Gulf states region. The wind farm will provide enough clean energy to power 16,000 homes, and will stop 110,000 tonnes (121,254 tons) of carbon dioxide from burning per year. Primrose Solar and Solarcentury are working together in the UK to build a 48 megawatt solar farm in Portsmouth. The companies are aiming to make it the greenest ground-mounted solar farm in the world. Think algae is just green slime? You're wrong: This natural resource can power anything from the light bulb to an entire city. Here are some of the most innovative designs powered by algae that could transform the world. A few years ago, BMW, Daimler and scientists at the Technische Universitat Munchen announced plans to work together to create an affordable and secure electric vehicle. The Visio.M is a small two-seater electric vehicle that weighs in at 800 pounds. It will be unveiled to the public at the eCarTec trade fair in Munich. In other green transportation news, last week Inhabitat was one of two teams to complete the challenge to drive 834 miles on a single tank of diesel fuel in the 2015 Audi A3 TDI, proving that it is possible to travel from Albuquerque to San Diego without refilling the tank. According to a couple from California the world's first hoverboard has arrived. The couple claims to have developed a functional hoverboard that makes use of electromagnetics to float about an inch off the ground. For urban commuters, Vello Bike has designed a high-performance folding bicycle that requires just a single kick to fold it and put it in the desired position. This means that you can transport the bike with you on public transportation or store it without much hassle. And in the world of aviation, Canadian company Hempearth is building the world's first airplane made of hemp. The plane is expected to be ready for flight by the end of next year. 3D printing holds a lot of potential for the design industry However, it also poses some issues for law enforcement officials, because it can allow individuals to design their own guns at home. Last week, a 28-year-old Japanese man became the first person to jail for 3D printing after being found guilty of creating two guns at home, and then sharing an instructional video to show others how to make the same. Inhabitat was in attendance at New York City's first get-together. Check out the best technology innovations on display including 3D-printed pens, as well as tablets with built-in projectors. 3D printing is well-established in the fields aerospace and medical technology, but it is only beginning to be used as a viable method of construction. The World's Advanced Saving Project presented an portable 3D printer that can create homes from clay, mud, and fibers at Maker Faire Rome. The group is hoping to bring the technology in some of the world's most deprived areas. Design duo Micaela Collella and Maurizio Barbario have designed plans for a prefab wood home. The foundation is constructed of an innovative steel and can be completely recycled. Philippe Starck, a French designer, recently joined up to build a new solar- and wind-powered house. The house which is two stories tall, produces 50% more energy than it consumes. Many of our readers are creating costumes for their children for Halloween. But very few can match this incredible dad's glowing LED stick figure costume that makes Zoey appear to be Minnie Mouse. If you're still at a loss for Halloween costume ideas and you would like to dress in something techy take a look at our fantastic images of human iPhones Androids and robots as well as Minecraft characters here.
